Subject: Nasty goes to The Match

This is my new blog about all things sports.

Warning to any North American readers expecting any of your sports to be featured. They will not. I do not watch Baseball, Basketball, Ice Hockey or American Football.

I am a huge sports fan though. The most important being football, or soccer to those in North America, in particular the team I have supported since I was a boy. Huddersfield Town.

Huddersfield Town.

"The greatest team in football!" We sing. "We won the league three times in a row" we sing. "Ooh to be a, ooh to be a terrier", we sing.

I have followed Huddersfield since I was a kid. I used to listen to the matches on the radio until I was old enough to get myself a ticket and get down to the games. My first season as a season ticket holder was 97/98 and have been every year bar one since.

I have listened and watched as the team has spent most of its time in the second or third tier of English football with two exceptions. One season in the fourth tier 03/04 and this season, finally seeing my team play in the top flight.

Last season we made it to the promised land. We got promoted via the Championship playoffs into the Premier League. It was fantastic, unbelievable. Some of the pressing football we played last season was just breathtaking. Now, facing off against the big boys. It's truly an incredible time to be a Town fan.

Highlight of the season so far has to be beating Manchester United at home, 2-1. Second favourite game was probably the loss to Manchester City, but we led them 1-0 at half time ultimately succumbing to a 2-1 defeat. Anyway, we have the same troubles as last season. Even whilst earning promotion we had a negative goal difference (-2), the main reason for this being that we have trouble scoring goals. But despite this we have a solid start to Premier league life and sit a few points above the drop zone as I write.

The weekend saw us defeated easily at home, 4-1, by West Ham United, a team buoyed by the appointment of David Moyes as manager. I did not go because I'm suffering with a quite nasty ear infection at the moment. Too many mistakes made. Let's hope for better next time out at Stoke!

I'm just enjoying the season. It's fantastic just to see all of the top players come to town. See all of the best teams in the flesh. Brilliant. Hopefully I'll get to enjoy it again next season!

So when you say "all things sports," then rule out all North American sports, what sports will you be wanting to appear in your new blog.

As Nasty knows, down in the depths of the 4th Tier, lives the team I have followed all my life...........Colchester United, who have an unusual link with Nasty's Huddersfield.

Back in 1936, my team evolved from the Amateur "Colchester Town", into professional "Colchester United". The first Manager was Ted Davis, ex-Huddersfield Town Goalkeeper, who was given leave to choose what colour strip the team played in. He opted for the same Blue & White Stripes that Huddersfield used..........which is why, to this day, both teams play in same colours.

Absolutely! At the time the Huddersfield strip would have been well known across the country, thrice champions (consecutively) in the twenties and always in contention near the top for the other years in those days.

Colchester briefly had the advantage over us, during their promotion year from the third tier back in, I think, '07 or '08? They either got a decent draw or won, Jason Scotland I think was playing... I think Southend went up that year as well... see where those two teams are now!

It was 2005/2006 season Nasty...........

Southend were League 1 Champions with 82 points
Colchester were 2nd with 79 points.
Huddersfield were 4th with 73 points

Don't know if Jason Scotland ever played for Huddersfield, he certainly didn't play for Colchester as far as I know.

Results that season went Huddersfield's way.........
Colchester 1 Huddersfield 1 - 24th September 2005
Huddersfield 2 Colchester 0 - 11th February 2006

Overall statistics of all league meetings between the two:-

Huddersfield 9 wins
Colchester 5 wins

Drawn games 11

Chris Iwelumo then? I think?

Maybe I remember it because it was a good win for us if we beat the league leaders/second place 2-0.

We lost in the playoffs to Barnsley despite being 2-0 up on aggregate at half time in the second leg, three second half goals for Barnsley put us out.

Here's a pub quiz question for years to come.

Which player scored the first ever Video Assistant Referee (VAR) awarded goal in English football?

Kelechi Iheanacho is the answer, it happened in tonight's FA cup match between Leicester City and Fleetwood Town.

I'm still unsure as to how I feel about VAR in football. On the one hand the part of me that wants things to be as correct as possible is pleased by it. The part of me that treasures football's fast pace thinks that stopping and going back every time there is a contentious decision to be made will affect my enjoyment and prevent all those pulsating games that I've always enjoyed from happening.

Also, it does not tackle the biggest problem. That is the lack of respect for those officiating the game. In fact VAR could make that even worse. You've got managers, coaching staff, players all yelling and demanding things of the referee. Imagine how much more that intensifies when they are calling for decisions to go to VAR. Instead of creating an atmosphere of respect it will only serve to further undermine the authority of the officials in my opinion and subject them to even more abuse.

I guess we will see how it integrates into football.

Roger Federer is on course for a remarkable 20th grand slam title in Australia this week. It's incredible. I love watching him play, like a painter on court he is almost effortless making flourishing strokes with his 'brush'.

I spent these past five or six years, what I might call the 'Djokovic years' just hoping and wanting Roger to put it all together in a way to defeat the automaton-like play of Novak. To be truthful, he rarely managed to put together a grand slam run in those years when he managed to get through both Djokovic and Nadal in the same week. Occasionally he would overcome one of them but the shear physical nature of the battles with those two would all too often leave him worn down and defeated.

But last year, Federer was resurgent whilst Djokovic has struggled with his body (and continues to do so). In fact Nadal has been struggling for years now as injury recurs due to the rigours of the tennis tour even though he too had a great year last year as he split the four majors with Federer. Federer goes on and on and that means as a result he is now being able to collect more grand slam triumphs into his late 30's. Long may it continue. I think his motivation is to continue until the Olympics in 2020 and try again for the one prize that has eluded him, the Olympics singles gold.

I for one hope he makes it.

I'm with you Nasty. He's an absolute joy to watch. He'll have his work cut out for him playing that youngster in the next round. Can't wait for it!

He's done it! I listened to it on the radio most of this morning. Roger Federer now the proud owner of 20 Grand Slam titles. Excellent! I suspect he will be installed as favourite for Wimbledon later this year should he stay fit. I'd love it if he played at Roland Garros too. Always something special about seeing him try to pit his skill against Nadal on clay. Obviously the head to head on clay is strongly in favour of the Spaniard but it would still interest me to see Federer 'version 2017/2018' give it a go.

Wozniacki won the women's too! Good for her. Never nice to have the title of an 'undeserved world number one' as she was widely regarded 7 or 8 years ago when she sat atop the rankings having never even played in a grand slam final. The turn around has been remarkable as I remember continually seeing her slide right down the rankings only as recently as 2 or 3 years ago.

Yes it's been a week of domestic cup action in English football. Arsenal will play Manchester City in the final of the League Cup. I suppose the two stories there, to me, are can Manchester City win the first part of a potential quadruple or can Arsenal Wenger guide Arsenal to the cup he has not managed to win during his tenure as manager. For Huddersfield it has been a draw in the FA cup fourth Round against Birmingham City who we were playing in the second tier last season. Jutkiewicz scored the equaliser for Birmingham, a former Town loanee.... they always come back to score against their former clubs...

No ice hockey? As opposed to what other kind(s) of hockey may be out there.

Nasty, my heart is broken...

Great win for Huddersfield on Sunday it was! 4-1 over Bournemouth to take us back out of the relegation places. Steve Mounie paying back some of his transfer fee with a man of the match performance.

Normally I'd try to watch the Winter Olympics but I just don't have time. I love Curling in particular, I liken it to Lawn bowling on ice. Fascinating sports.

Ice hockey, never got into that. There's a local team here, the Sheffield Steelers. I used to like playing the EA sports computer games of ice hockey in the 90's on my Sega Megadrive. But yeah, I understand the sport but I can't watch and follow everything!

At least you understand hockey, Nasty! A lot of people don't.

Hockey is a very simple sport, made difficult by adding the elements of ice and skates.

I've watched hours and hours of soccer on television. No matter how hard I try to follow it, none of it makes any sense to me. I've had the "rules" explained to me, although I'm not completely sure I believe there actually are rules. I don't know why or how it ends. The clock doesn't run the right way to make any sense to me. I can't figure out what the "penalties" are, or what happens if a penalty is called.

I need someone to take me to a live match, and then explain it to me as it's all playing out. If that's possible, over the noise. I want to understand it, but I just do not.

Well, if you're ever in this neck of the woods!

Impressive performances from the English sides in the UEFA Champions League over the last two nights. Big wins for Liverpool and Manchester City. Good draw for Spurs. I think they will all make it through to the next round after the second legs. No doubt there will be many saying that the money in the English Premier League is giving them the advantage over their European counterparts....

My son is a fan of Chelsea, me, I'm a fan of the Gunners.

Elle,
I enjoy ice hockey.
I went to the fights the other night and a game of ice hockey broke out. I hate all the fighting, I get why, I just don't like it.

Mark, I was at a hockey game, in the 8th row, just left of center ice and right above the penalty box. One of the players on the other team was ejected from the game. He was furious. He turned from the penalty box, where he thought he was going, and headed across the ice at top speed. And then it all went into slow motion when I saw him raise his stick, and the looks on the people's faces who saw him coming right at them...

He hit that plexiglass as hard as he could with his stick, before he thought he would be heading down the hallway to his locker room. And the glass literally exploded. It blew chunks of plexiglass 12 rows up, got in everyone's hair, eyes, faces, and lots of them little kids -- it was a nightmare.

Our team came flying over the bench onto the ice to try to help, and the other team did the same, trying to protect their player from being murdered, who was in shock.

No other fights broke out, which was a miracle, but that was so horrific.

I can't remember how much that team was fined, and how much he was fined, personally, but it was so terrible, I had to get up and head for the concourse and just pace for awhile and cry.

No one was seriously, dangerously hurt, but I didn't know if I'd ever go to another hockey game in my life. And I had season tickets with a pile of my friends. It was an AHL team and game, and while that team was allowed to come back, that player was banned from our ice for life.

I understand the fighting, too, and that's why there's that handy penalty box, to let those angry grizzly bears calm down again. But major penalties can get you ejected, and he was so angry, I think he saw red and didn't realize what he was doing until it was too late.

You could hear a pin drop in there as the officials and security and everyone on the Medical Staff raced over to try to help those people.

I've seen some crazy things at hockey games, but that was by far the worst.

And now, back to... soccer? I think soccer? Which I still don't understand, at all, but I'm trying to figure it out.
