Subject: Nasty goes to The Match

This is my new blog about all things sports.

Warning to any North American readers expecting any of your sports to be featured. They will not. I do not watch Baseball, Basketball, Ice Hockey or American Football.

I am a huge sports fan though. The most important being football, or soccer to those in North America, in particular the team I have supported since I was a boy. Huddersfield Town.

40 seconds is all it took for Conor McGregor to finish Cowboy Cerrone.

My son and some of his friends paid $65.00 for the pre-fights and 40 seconds of Main Event. Yet, they seemed to enjoy it.

I loved it. Although I slept through much of it. What I saw I enjoyed, same story as usual. It’s a big ask to stay awake into the wee hours!

A friend of mine was saying he was glad he hadn’t paid for it or stayed up because it only lasted 40 seconds.

I told him that UFC have pretty competitive and interesting fight cards, probably for this very reason. If one is short then some of the other bouts will have been long and it’s not like boxing in that the undercard of a UFC event usually contains big names, former champions, or sometimes multiple title bouts on the same card (two or three).

I often listen to the boxing on my radio on a Saturday night when I go to bed.

A lot of sports are surprisingly exciting when listened to. Combat sports work well on the radio with good commentary. I’ve listened to many football games over the years on the radio. I’ve spent many an hour listening to cricket on the radio, mainly because it disappeared from free TV years ago....

I watched the Andy Murray documentary, Resurfaced, last night. I would highly recommend it. Fascinating insight into the mind of an athlete facing the prospect of never competing again. He really opened himself up for this, but I suppose he really is a heart on sleeve kind of guy.

Speaking only for myself, Andy Murray was an acquired taste. I only learned to appreciate him late in his career.

He has a wry sense of humour. He does not come across well on the court.

I wonder who will finish on the most Grand Slam titles between Roger, Rafa and Novak? Maybe they’ll all finish on 20? That would be quite nice.

I would have loved to have seen Rod Laver (at his best) play in this very competitive era. He was my fave.

I think Djokovic will end up having the most Grand Slams.

Federer turns 39 this year, it's phenomenal that he is still a serious challenger, but the empty 4 and a half years between winning Wimbledon 2012 and the Australian Open 2017 will eventually cost him in the Grand Slam race.

Nadal is unquestionably the best of all time in clay, and I suppose he will keep adding Roland Garros every year to his tally as long as he's healthy, but Djokovic is better than him all around and eventually will surpass both Nadal and Federer in Grand Slams.

The only way that doesn't happen within the next two years is if Tsitsipas, Zverev or Thiem rise up to the Big-3 level and consistency.

I like to add Lavers 8 pro slam titles to his 11 grand slam event wins to give him an appropriate number for his dominance. So to me he had 19 also. I would also love to see him play this era but unfortunately it is impossible to know how players like him would go if they had started in this era of crazy racket technology and ultra fitness.

I’m tempted to agree with you Gil_Galad although as a lover of watching Roger play I will be sad that he will actually end up with fewer then both of his rivals. With hindsight and revisionist history, even if you leave his years between 2012 and 2017 as they are he easily could have won Wimbledon 2008. The two US open semi finals with Novak in 2010 and 2011 where he held match point could easily have gone his way and of course Wimbledon 2019....
But it happened the way it did!

I agree, not much point in thinking how it could have gone. Though that Wimbledon final last year...

In any case, I don't think it's too difficult to imagine how Laver or any athlete of any sport would fit into a different era. You just have to ask the right questions: Was he a talent-based or work-based player? Or both? Was he dominant until late in his career or did he fizzle out early? What surface was he best at? Was he an expert in one surface and weak in others or all around good? etc.
Rackets, equipment, fitness, that's all circumstantial.

You also have to wonder how many slams Roger might have won 2012-2017 had he changed to the larger racket head size sooner. 6 months out injured back end of 2016, spends the comeback training with the larger racket and hey presto, wins 3 of the next 5 majors. It did coincide with Novak’s loss of form but still worth noting.

Colchester riding high with former Huddersfield striker Theo Robinson scoring a brace for them today.

Was very relieved with the Huddersfield win today, takes some relegation concern away for a couple of weeks at least!

Speculation.... how many majors would Bjorn Borg have ended on had he not retired so early?

He won 11 but had never won the US open and, I believe, never played the Aussie Open.

Would he have got to 20?

I'm not sure. Only if he could have rekindled his fire somehow. There was a reason he gave it up.
