Subject: Nasty goes to The Match

This is my new blog about all things sports.

Warning to any North American readers expecting any of your sports to be featured. They will not. I do not watch Baseball, Basketball, Ice Hockey or American Football.

I am a huge sports fan though. The most important being football, or soccer to those in North America, in particular the team I have supported since I was a boy. Huddersfield Town.

Wigan defeated Manchester City this evening to knock them out of the FA Cup! Brilliant! Some pundits and fans have been harping on about City winning all four competitions available to them this season. I always thought that it would be highly unlikely since all it takes is one bad day in the knockout competitions and you're gone.

The other remarkable occurrence this week was Roger Federer returning to world number one. He is truly a remarkable athlete and an inspiration to me.

Been watching the snooker these past couple of days. The semi finals of the world Grand Prix. Was hoping to see a Ronnie O’Sullivan vs Mark Selby final but Selby lost in an epic 6-5 to Ding Jun Hui last night. Really enjoyed watching that. Selby not at his best but almost edged through using his tactical nous.

It’s great to watch both Ronnie and Selby. I’ve always liked to watch the tactical play when Selby plays, truly fascinating how consistent, accurate safety play eventually bring a mistake from the opponent. It’s also amazing watching Ronnie break build. The way he has such control and positioning. Just effortless and stylish. The best ever, that’s why he holds the record for century breaks made in professional competition with 925 or thereabouts.

The other biggie from this weekend was Huddersfield Town winning away at West Brom to put a bit of daylight between them and the bottom three teams. We may yet stay up!

Also watched the women’s curling final, bit disappointing as Sweden easily beat South Korea without needing much special.

Well Ronnie won, 10 frames to 3. Cruising through it in the end.

Oh, and in football, Manchester City won the EFL cup. Also cruising. Past Arsenal 3-0. Guardiola's first trophy in England! How many more will he win with City! Only time will tell.

Well I watched Huddersfield Town set the second highest possession percentage in the premier league since that data was recorded in the 03/04 season. They had 81% of the possession on Saturday afternoon, their opponents Swansea did not take a shot and they had one solitary touch of the ball in the Town penalty area. The visitors had Jordan Ayew sent off after 11 minutes so played the remaining 80 a man short. We hit the post, we hit the crossbar, we had a player miss a golden chance from 6 yards but the game finished 0-0 with Swansea defending everything thrown at them in an incredibly well organised display. 8 games to go, realistically 2 or 3 more wins required.

Most enjoyable goal of the weekend was Jamie Vardy's strike against West Brom. The ball played over his shoulder from Riyad Mahrez and the volleyed strike was just incredible.

Phew!

Huddersfield Town remain on a knife edge coming into the final games of the season. Today I breathed a huge sigh of relief as the team's below all failed to pick up wins. Huddersfield play Manchester City, Chelsea and then Arsenal on the final day. That game with Arsenal also happens to be Arsenal Wengers final game in charge if the Gunners, just our luck! I can't see us picking up anymore points so just relying on either Swansea or Southampton (who play each other next) not managing to win another game.

Snooker world championships have been going on these past two weeks. It is always held right here in Sheffield. When I had more time on my hands I would always go and watch a couple of sessions. Tonight's semi final final session between Barry Hawkins and Mark Williams was excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The final will be contested by two fortysomethings in Williams and John Higgins! The favourites have all fallen leaving these two former champs to battle it out. I hope Mark Williams wins, it would be his first World title since 2003. That match is played across tomorrow and Monday.

The other sporting event I was keeping my ear on tonight was the heavyweight boxing rematch bout between David Haye and Tony Bellew. Bellew won easily with a fifth round stoppage. I was a little surprised as I followed it on the radio but I suppose I should not have been. Haye should have stayed retired... I guess he ran out of money or something. Who knows.

Sorry, the computer posted before I was finished. I was correcting The Sport of Kings. I haven't been on this blog before, so I don't know if there are any other fans here of the sport but me.

The Triple Crown season started today with the triumph of Justified in the Kentucky Derby. It can't get much better than that!

Next up, the Preakness, then the Belmont Stakes. can Justified win it all?

Manchester City 0 Huddersfield 0.................terrific result for Terriers, Nasty, are they definitely safe, or issue still in doubt?

I try to steer clear of Horses or dogs but in theory I would enjoy them with time to follow them but afraid I have no appreciation of the great history involved in Racing. Much like any sport, if you have the great tapestry of historical results and performances then you enjoy the thrills of it so much more. Sadly there is only time enough to follow a certain number of sports in such detail.

Huddersfield are not safe yet but that point might be crucial. It means that the two chasing teams will need to actually win a game to catch up but because of Huddersfields terrible goal difference they only need to be able to catch up not overtake. Much more optimistic now!

I follow the Triple Crown, but little else involved with Horse Racing. My father did, but he was a gambling man, I'm not.

:D

It's almost unbelievable, really, the dream continues!

1-1 as you said, I was working last night during the game but managed to keep my eye on the score, when we took the lead I couldn't believe it! Amazing! Then we clung on.

One match to go, it will be a party atmosphere and a nice way for Arsene Wenger to end his Arsenal career at a ground that he has never visited in a competitive match before.

Still revelling in the glory of having survived the trapdoor back into the Championship. Looking forward to next season, hopefully with a few more goals scored this time!

Tomorrow is the FA Cup Final, far more important event than some wedding! Why would anyone be interested in watching a wedding if you don't know the participants? If two people love each other and want to celebrate that love and commit their lives to each other then great, all the best! Just don't understand all the fuss, hype and coverage. Get more sport on! :)

So Chelsea take on Manchester United. Grudge match if sorts between the two managers. Should be fun! I hope Mourinho and his United win.

Anyway

Well the two "sports" on TV this past weekend were the Royal Wedding and the FA Cup................the jury is still out as to which was the least boring. :(

I see the new Captain of England (Harry Kane) states that, "England could win the World Cup in Russia" ! Well, yes, they COULD win it.....in much the same way as "my" Colchester United COULD win the FA Cup next season. I am unsure which is the more improbable.

England has a far better chance in Russia than my USA, but if I were a betting man, I would have to go Germany and then Brazil.

England will struggle to even get through the group stage and almost certainly lose in the first knockout even if they do get through. I’d love to be proven wrong with that statement but I highly doubt it.

I think Spain will have a good outing, Germany must be close and France. I also favour a dark horse like Argentina perhaps. I don’t think it will be Brazil’s year.

Having watched England on TV of late, against Nigeria and Costa Rica, personally I haven't seen anything to suggest that you might be wrong Nasty.

Preakness tomorrow - burning question, will Justify be the next triple crown winner? The Sport of Kings is now included here! Thanks, Nasty!
