Subject: Nasty goes to The Match

Posted by: nasty_liar

This is my new blog about all things sports.

Warning to any North American readers expecting any of your sports to be featured. They will not. I do not watch Baseball, Basketball, Ice Hockey or American Football.

I am a huge sports fan though. The most important being football, or soccer to those in North America, in particular the team I have supported since I was a boy. Huddersfield Town.

Feel like I’m missing out constantly, just not around to watch these games!

Germany, France, USA look strongest with Canada and England outside chances.

I don’t have that tech but to be honest I’ve never been one for watching sports, other than highlights, when I already know the result.

I can obviously look up highlights and watch those.

Contentious penalty retake for France yesterday. I believe common sense should be applied and the fact that the keeper gained no advantage from being off the goal line should mean that the missed penalty should have stood.

Would consider that Italy could possibly consider themselves hard done by.........probably technically a penalty, but IMO the Brazilian girl tried to body charge the larger Italian girl..............and bounced off! Then got a penalty out of it.

I could be wrong, but I don't think that Brazil made it through to the Knockout Round. As I recall, there was a three way tie, and Brazil came in third on Goal Differential.

Because this World Cup is a 24 team one with 6 groups of 4 it means that 4 of the third place teams in the group stage make it through to the last 16.

So the four 3rd place teams with the most points go through. Brazil’s 4 points definitely takes them through because there are two or more groups where the third place team will only score 3 points.

Yesterday I watched England v Afghanistan in the Cricket World Cup. Fantastic game. Afghanistan were set a high target, but came out with very positive attitude and their performance did not reflect their position in the table.

Dorsetmaid, I was sneakily keeping an eye on the live reporting feed whilst at work yesterday. Wish I could have seen that. Not really for the spirit shown by Afghanistan in the face of an insurmountable target but the blitzing performance by Morgan after the groundwork was laid by the top order. Records tumbled. Most sixes in an ODI (or might just be World Cup ODI) by both individual and team!

England have the toughest opposition left to face though. Let’s see what happens, but they are ranked number one! Just have to go out and perform!

England v Japan match just finished. Good game and Japan played well in second half and England a bit sloppy. But well done to them for hanging in there and getting the second goal and going through. Look forward to Sunday when they play the next match.
As for Scotland, at 70 mins they were beating Argentina 3 -0 and then they let Argentina get two back. Scotland gave away a penalty in added on time and although the Scotland keeper saved it VAR over ruled it and on second taking Argentina scored to level the score.
The point is at 70 mins you shouldn't let two goals in and then give away a penalty. Sloppy play by Scotland I am afraid.
I just wonder how VAR is going to affect the Premier league when it comes in at the start of the coming season.

More penalty farce! Ridiculous! I don’t feel bad for Scotland because they totally blew it but I do hate watching this nonsense with VAR.

Have I ever mentioned my intense dislike of the VAR? Yes I did when we were discussing World Cup 2018 in Russia.

This is not an area of the game that requires pinpoint accuracy. Oh hang on you’re slightly ahead of the line a millisecond before the pen was taken. Give me a break. I have never sat at the Mcalpine/Galpharm/John Smiths stadium over the years and thought, “damnit, you know what would improve my enjoyment of this game? Getting someone in a room upstairs to double check that the players leg didn’t go an inch too far or someone offside because their foot went two inches behind the defenders arm.”

No I didn’t, the game did not need technology except for the goal line to check the ball crossing the line.

Next season is going to be a nightmare. The hand ball changes are also ludicrous and open to abuse by players kicking the ball at players arms hoping to get a penalty.

In total agreement with Nasty on subject of VAR......if we have to have it, hope it stays in Premiership and doesn't migrate downwards as we sure don't want, or need, it in League 2.

Whatever happened to "Referee's discretion"? I thought the referee controlled the game, not an electronic "Gizmo"....lets go back to sensible refereeing, and not matches being decided by a big toe poking into offside position.
AND go back to the old "The referees decision is final".

C30 I’m with you.

The poison in the game was never the accuracy of the decisions it was and still is the total disrespect for the match officials by players, coaching staff, sports commentators/analysers and fans alike.

Now governing bodies in football can’t do a huge amount about the fans but they could easily stamp out disrespect and abuse of match officials by players and coaches by ramping up the punishments. Once eradicated there the example would be shown to fans that abuse of officials is not acceptable.
