Subject: Nasty goes to The Match

This is my new blog about all things sports.

Warning to any North American readers expecting any of your sports to be featured. They will not. I do not watch Baseball, Basketball, Ice Hockey or American Football.

I am a huge sports fan though. The most important being football, or soccer to those in North America, in particular the team I have supported since I was a boy. Huddersfield Town.

Good luck FC Cincinnati for next season. It was the first year after all!

I'd take Danny Rose in a heartbeat! I think most defenders are being made to look bad against Liverpool over the past year or so.

Well done Colchester!

It was their first year in the MLS, they had previously won the USL, which is a second division soccer league here in the U.S..
The ownership group has promised better players for next season. The team has a tremendous fan base, sold out every game, very enthusiastic, travels well, merchandise sales through the roof.
A lot of disappointed fans, with much higher expectations, perhaps unreal, but still.

Sounds great Mark. Speaking as someone who has supported a long time struggling/lower league team I can safely say that any highs are then even better when they do come!

Here in England, should Liverpool win tonight they could draw Colchester in the next round for a Funtrivia grudge match!

Wouldn't be a grudge match for me. I live in Colchester and support them.

Liverpool currently 2:1 down.

Just a thought................both Manchester United and Manchester City playing against The U's. We share that nickname with Oxford United and Cambridge United (but we used it first!)

South Africa too strong for England this morning. Didn’t watch it, was out running.

Yes Liverpool have a problem there. But surely they can just play it when the semi final 1st leg should play then take an FA cup Midweek replay date for the semi final.

What is it about England and World Cups? Whether it's football or rugby they always seem to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

The whole Liverpool thing is a mess. I think it is down to the FA and Premier league and Aston Villas compliance.
Was so pleased at the last minute win today. Colchester won as well.
Big match next Sunday against City.

So Pep picks out Mane for diving on Saturday against Villa in his after match interview.. I don't suppose that any of his players have dived....oops Raheem Sterling did exactly that in Cities tie against Villa in their recent October match. Not first time Sterling has been noted for diving either. Most footballers these days take to the ground in the box at the slightest touch.
I am not in agreement with the practise but here we have a case of pot calling kettle black.

He’s doing it deliberately prior to the game at the weekend. He’s done this before, what do we used to call it when Fergie did it? Mind games? Pep is calculated like that. Just like his team is calculated, I remember watching them play at the John Smith stadium during our first season in the premier league. We took a surprise lead before half time, they battered us in the second half with wave after wave of attacks as they equalised and then got the winner. Fair play, they deserved it. But during their incessant assault on our defence we broke out of defence on three or four occasions and looked like the pitch was about to open up for a counter attack. Fouled. Every time, fouled to put a stop to the break. It was too clinical to be by accident. I know he denies it, but it’s part of the City philosophy because they leave themselves so open at the back somebody has to stop the break by fair or unfair means. It looks rash, but it’s calculated.

Oh yes Pep is indeed a master of the footballing dark arts. They are very dirty players and I think I even remember the game you mentioned but it could have been one of the many others were they applied these tactics.
We play Genk at home tonight. At least not having to travel abroad.

"Stop the man at all costs"...........a feature of modern game, seen week in and week out from Premiership to grass roots amateurs.

Pep now trying to retract what he said about Mane saying he was misunderstood!!!!
Hard fought win last night for Liverpool but a win is a win. Apparently Liverpool will play both the games in December which are within a day of each other against A.Vila (scheduled Dec17th) and the second in Qatar (scheduled 18th Dec)Club World Cup by Fielding two different teams. Just as well we have a reasonably large squad.

The funniest example I saw recently was Arsenals Guendouzi rugby tackling Wilfred Zaha at the weekend.

I know what you say Ray, this is certainly not exclusive to Pep and Manchester City, I just think it's extra frustrating with his team because they apply such intense pressure and keep the ball for so long that it drives you mad that they finally lose the ball and what they do is foul the man as quickly as possible in order to give them time to reset to defensive positions.

But yes, it's up and down all levels of the game and has been a feature going way back too not just the modern game. I think it also stands out more in the modern game because there are so many fewer tackles made in the Premier league today when compared to years gone by. Those kind of stat started being measured around 2003 I think. Certainly in the past ten years I've seen a comparison before where they showed the number of tackles per game was something like 10 fewer on average in the 2017/18 season compared to ten years earlier. So then when teams are tactically fouling when they don't actually tackle as often it looks even more glaring.
