Subject: Nasty goes to The Match

This is my new blog about all things sports.

Warning to any North American readers expecting any of your sports to be featured. They will not. I do not watch Baseball, Basketball, Ice Hockey or American Football.

I am a huge sports fan though. The most important being football, or soccer to those in North America, in particular the team I have supported since I was a boy. Huddersfield Town.

So Klopp played a bunch of kids against Everton and they were brilliant. In the second half they played Everton off the field and Everton never got one shot on target
The future for Liverpool looks bright with homegrown talent.

Liverpool 1 Everton 0

Here’s one for you followers of darts.

Does Gerwen Price have the most inappropriate nickname for any darts player? He is called the ‘Iceman’, but cool and calm.... he is anything but!

I'm really looking forward to the return of Conor McGregor to the octagon next week against Donald Cerrone. Win or lose he makes you care about it and that's how the fight game works!

And while I am thinking about nicknames this will be the Notorious vs the Cowboy.

Is 2019 calendar year Liverpool side the best English team ever?

I would argue yes.

In fact I would go as far as to say that the only other team that can match up to them at all is the Manchester City side from the past couple of seasons.

If we would ignore point totals for the moment, because they reflect the competition that year, and not the overall dominance of a particular team, in my opinion.
I submit,

Arsenal 2003/04

That’s a good one.

I should clarify. I don’t just mean best team versus the competition they had at the time. In which case I would definitely be thinking about Arsenal 03/04. I can’t pick this Liverpool side for that honour yet because they haven’t even won a league title yet.

I actually mean the best if they were to play any team in English top flight history.

I think the game has progressed so far over the past ten years or so that no teams from the past, if you could transport them through time, would stand up to the modern Liverpool or Manchester City sides. The tactics they now use, the fitness and relentlessness of the players and the professionalism of the entire staff has taken it there.

I think using those parameters, George Best wouldn't make the team.

My opinion is that George Best would not but neither would any other player from that era, simply not fit enough. The game is faster, the players are finer athletes.

If you transported present day players back to the 60s 70s or even 80s the majority of them wouldn't last five minutes on the pitch, however fit they are, have you ever seen a modern day player get dirty or a hair out of place? They roll around on the ground in faux agony at the slightest touch and complain they have to play 2 games in 4 days ,they wouldn't cope with a laced ball either, the list goes on and on. George Best,Pele,Bobby Charlton,Bobby Moore and a host of others from that era would fit perfectly into the "modern" game because they loved playing football, how many players would play now without huge wages and their endorsements, none.

I agree with the first point. Modern players would not be able to play if you transported them to the 60’s essentially for the reasons you state. I’ve read Bobbys books and he outlines perfectly the liberties players like Nobby Styles were able to take with other players, heck even as recently as Roy Keane’s era just look at his disgraceful revenge tackle on Alfie Inge Haaland. So yes, teams kicked each other and it was not penalised and yes Best and Pele and Bobby had to cope with that.

But I disagree that you could transport them into modern day football and expect them to do much. Like I say, it’s faster, its more about endurance and that is the precise reason that teams cannot play more than twice a week. They are pushing the physical powers of the athlete to the maximum and recovery is so important. Even as recently as the 90’s they’d be in the bar after a game....

So yes, transporting individuals from either era to the other and they could not do it.

If you played an entire team of modern vs older generations, though, I think the modern teams would win more times than not. Tactics and fitness, that is what’s Co changed in the game over the past 20 years.
