It's a mixture of everything and something for everyone, Sci-fi,Superheroes,time travel, action and definitely weird, based on a Comic bookseries co-written by singer Gerard Way(My Chemical Romance) Reply #121. May 14 20, 10:18 AM |

I managed to watch about of Alexander (2005). Even though I have plenty of time on my hands at the moment, I still resent the time wasted. Reply #122. May 14 20, 4:27 PM |

Do you ever hate a show but you keep watching, and watching, because you are sure that sometime a real plot will show up? I've done that with movies and books and been so disgusted with myself. Reply #123. May 14 20, 9:05 PM |

Last night I started watching the series Blood which I had recorded from channel 5. I saw it was the second series and that because I had made a series link all episodes were shown for series 1. I couldn't remember if I had watched series 1 from 2 years ago so decided to just watch episode 1 and see if I remembered it. I hadn't seen it before so am now engrossed. Set in Ireland it is about a family whose mother has died and one of the daughters suspects the father of having killed the mother. There are other sub plots going on as well. I am now up to episode 4 of the first series and can't wait to get back to it. Godwit this is a great thread. Thanks for setting but up. Reply #125. May 15 20, 1:50 AM |

supersal1 - I have only seen trailer of that film...........and snatches of "Troy"............IMO any resemblance to possible reality is purely accidental in both films. Reply #126. May 15 20, 1:52 AM |

I agree the range of shows and excellent comments are wonderful, here. Just took a comedy crossword here at FT, and am reminded that Johnny English is pretty darn funny. So is Get Smart. Airplane! And for movies, Mrs Doubtfire. Reply #127. May 15 20, 2:11 AM |

I''m afraid some of those, like Troy, are all about arm candy (eye candy?). Just handsome folks running about looking quite serious and handsome. Though we should cut them a little slack because supposedly they launched a thousand ships with those faces. Reply #128. May 15 20, 2:14 AM |

I saw Troy, it wasn't too bad. Colin Farrell managed to make one of the greatest military leaders of all time look like a hysterical, over-emotional child. Reply #129. May 15 20, 5:32 PM |

When I first saw the tv ads for Snowpiercer I thought it looked interesting. Now I'm sick and tired of seeing the same ads repeatedly. It looks like the typical dystopian tale. This time it takes place on a train and the world is frozen. Godwit, eres the basic plot: A catastrophe strikes Earth. Most of the world's population is dead. The climate has undergone a drastic change. The Haves have a pampered, indulgent lifestyle. The Have Nots are extremely poor, live in squalid, hopeless conditions. The HNs are taken advantage of and abused by the Haves. The Have Nots rise up in rebellion against the Haves. A graphic novel (or book), then a movie, then a television series is born. Old story, new setting. Reply #131. May 16 20, 9:47 PM |

MiraJane: That's the disaster formula all right! Although they typically have no other plot, and the acting is so-so, I still love those movies. Twister, giant ants, earthquakes, aliens. "I Am Legend" is fantastic. Super horror I don't enjoy--never got into zombies or gross diseases. But, it's the same plot you so aptly sum up, same heroic victory. I read that "Contagion" is the number one streamed movie since the pandemic. Seems an irony. Wouldn't we rather watch happy Shirley Temple? Maybe we want to watch people face and overcome a major "natural" threat. Reply #132. May 17 20, 12:52 PM |

I do think "Snowpiercer" is a strangely awkward title. ? Reply #133. May 17 20, 12:53 PM |

Snowpiercer is the name of the train the world's known population is on. The world has entered a "second ice age" in the coming TV series, inspired by a Korean film, inspired by a graphic novel. Reply #134. May 17 20, 2:22 PM |

Somehow they avoid freezing to death in a train? I love riding a train but it's always cold in there...they don't have a bit of insulation, do they? Anyway, I bet I'll have a good time watching it. :) Reply #135. May 17 20, 2:27 PM |

Hey all, just catching up on the thread. I too am struggling to find any comedy that I enjoy at the moment - it has all become very driven by politics and activism and it is just tiring. I was wondering if anybody else had been watching “The Mandalorian” on Disney+ and saw that Nasty_Liar had! I loved it as well and I am not a great “Star Wars” fan. Have also been watching through the Claire Foy series of “The Crown” on Netflix. Hours of good tv. Was somewhat disappointed by my first watching of the third season where Olivia Colman plays the middle-aged Queen Elizabeth II. I am going to watch through it again to see if my feelings about it change! Reply #137. May 17 20, 3:51 PM |

Welcome jonnowales! Good to see you. I agree, Claire Foy is an up-and-coming force. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claire_Foy There's a wonderful and varied list of all the suggestions here, starting at #165 I think. But the comments are the best part. So far most feel as you do--that comedy has let us down. Please let us know if you find something good. Reply #138. May 18 20, 10:02 AM |

I watched the Netflix documentary about Michelle Obama's book tour. Like the book it's called 'Becoming' and it was very good. She displays such humour, warmth, and compassion. I recommend this doc. Reply #139. May 18 20, 10:10 AM |
