Just finished up "House of Cards"- overall pretty good. They should have not bothered with the last season IMO. Reply #701. Jan 29 21, 12:15 PM |

In the UK version of the 'House of Cards', it's all done within 4 episodes. Reply #702. Jan 29 21, 2:08 PM |

About "foreign" TV: I wonder if British "House of Cards" makes sense to an American? I watched "Kavanagh" (John Thaw) I loved it. So excellent. But I was lost for a while. Starting with wearing wigs, and Queen's counsel, and a different reading of rights-- "A Touch of Frost" --cop and detective show--is wonderful as well, and again, lots of words and deeds British-specific. Very enjoyable, though I'm sure I miss a lot of references and backstory. "Professor T" is outstanding. It's Belgian. He's a far more serious, tender, broken "Monk". Reply #703. Jan 30 21, 2:06 AM |

We watch a lot of US TV series in the UK, Godwit. I guess we might have been a bit lost with some of the terms used in the beginning but we soon get used to it. In fact I can't recall the feeling of not understanding. It must have been a long time ago. For the British 'House of Cards' I guess the most puzzling thing might be the British political system and how that works - different from the US system. I'm still trying to get my head around the US electoral and government system but there was so much reporting of the recent election that I learned a lot more about it. Reply #704. Learning much about the US political system--as did we all! Much of it is formality and tradition which few had cause to pay attention to, until recently. I have Brit Box maybe I can get House of Cards. My post space is way too long. Hope it sets right when it posts. Reply #705. Jan 30 21, 10:56 PM |

My mum is Canadian and among her pet peeves is all the US channels up there, and how many of her friends watch them. Though often I phone her to ask what BBC is reporting in Canada, about what is going on in the US. Half the time I've heard nothing about it. Reply #706. Jan 30 21, 11:02 PM |

I've discovered "Bridgerton" is not quite Pride and Prejudice. There's a lot of adult lovin' going on. So not a family show. But, complex characters, great interpersonal relationship and growth, fun plot. Reply #707. Jan 31 21, 3:58 PM |

I grew up in a small, and ancient, city in south-west England; this popped up in my YouTube feed today and I thought you might like to see it. My excuse for adding it to the list is that it's by British Pathé and was probably made for the cinema. :) https://youtu.be/yU4OfA5Ncxk Reply #708. Feb 01 21, 2:33 PM |

A lovely and interesting place, flopsy. I'd like to visit it when visiting other places becomes safe again. The narrator has an accent you don't hear these days. Reply #709. Feb 02 21, 3:12 PM |

I'm planning to watch a film called 'The Dig'. I thought it would be fairly obscure, but today I keep seeing people writing about it, having seen it, and I'm trying to avoid reading those comments as I don't want spoilers. Reply #710. Feb 02 21, 3:14 PM |

I'm reminded of an episode of a British sitcom called 'The Likely Lads' where they spend the whole episode trying to avoid seeing or hearing about the results of a football match they intend to enjoy watching on the television later. It's really difficult for them to avoid it. News about it seems to be everywhere but they are ultimately successful and settle down to watch it, with some satisfaction and anticipation, only to discover that it was rained off. Reply #711. Mixamatosis -"The Dig"............HIGHLY recommended IMO. I used to live about 3-4 miles from that site, and my mother visited it in 1939. Reply #713. Feb 04 21, 2:41 AM |

Lol, The Likely Lads sounds wonderful. I enjoy All Creatures also, though I've only seen a couple of episodes first season, when he gets his first job as a Vet. Reply #714. Feb 04 21, 9:05 PM |

I watched the UK version of House of Cards. I liked the first two episodes, F.U. was deliciously evil, but the third (fourth?) episode in which he gets his comeuppance was dissatisfying. Your Likely Lads episode sounds like a Benny Hill skit, he has the game saved on video and he's sitting down to watch it while the wife is saying, "But I know the score!" and he keeps yelling, "Don't tell me the score!" Finally she says, "Fine, go ahead and watch it then... but you won't see any goals." I'm still watching YouTube almost exclusively, with some BitChute thrown in for my conspiracy theory fix. The YouTube algorithm must have noted that I watch a lot of Korean videos because yesterday it fed me a Korean McDonald's commercial. I was like, "Yeah, okay, fair enough." Reply #715. Hairy Bear. The youtube algorithm had me figured for a Muslim man I think as I kept getting adverts for Muslim dating sites showing women. Now it still shows me dating sites but not Muslim ones. It still thinks I am a man. Reply #716. Feb 05 21, 12:47 PM |

I love All Creatures Great and Small and The Likely Lads, Godwit. Very different shows appealing to different people I guess, but great in their own ways. Reply #717. Feb 05 21, 1:58 PM |

I might have to watch more YouTube just to see how the algorithm pegs me. Sounds amusing, and so so wrong. Anyone seen this new movie the Dissident? Or any of the nominations for this year's awards? Reply #718. Feb 05 21, 10:53 PM |

If you like the Great British Bake Off, you might also like... The Great British Sewing Bee (BBC), and The Great Pottery Throw Down (Ch4). If you think that cake-making was tense, watch what these guys feel about a wonky seam or slightly sloping slipware! Reply #719. Feb 07 21, 1:13 PM |
