Curious, what are you watching while the world spins around us?

What's your favorite thing about it? Does it help you get through?

Several dictionary sites: SEQUEL
1. Something that follows as a continuation, especially a literary, dramatic, or cinematic work whose narrative continues that of a preexisting work.
2. A result or consequence

Aha. Setting aside the problem of Spartacus and his men all dead, the film is NOT a "sequel". Nor is it a prequel. Let's see. If they did "Saving Private Ryan" only Ryan is at home now, and the film is about other battles of that war, with flashbacks to Ryan--what would that be? A completely different film, eh?

Anywho it's called "300: Rise of an Empire" and focuses on "the origins of Xerxes". It is called a sequel.

I guess because the film itself, not the contents, follows the first film. ?

There's yet another sequel, 300: The Resurgence (2018). About "the rise of Alexander" and conflicts with Xerxes. I can't recommend them because apparently it's all about serious gore, death and mayhem. (screenrant: "Based upon the writings of the Greek historian Herodotus"). But the "color art" is pretty amazing. Oh wait, now I'm reading that the writer and artist Frank Miller is in hot water. Sigh. Like everyone else who can't play well with others.

Well thank you for the interest and the opportunity to learn all this stuff. :)

The graphic novels the movie were based on were ok. Not the best work of Frank Miller. The Dark Knight Returns series was groundbreaking. He had Batman grow old and disillusioned with society. Other artists then copied his style and things went a little too grim in the comics world for a few years.

And yeah, he's no stranger to being in hot water.

I've just been catching up all the topics. I'm glad, Godwit, that there are now more than two of us who have enjoyed Professor T. Here are a few other random thoughts:

On Morse: John Thaw, who played Morse, seemed to be working all the time from the eighties until the time of his death. In addition to Morse, he was playing Kavanaugh and also had "A Year in Provence" (along with several others). Check out the "Provence" one to see a character completely different from Morse and Kavanaugh. He was really talented. I've also enjoyed the Morse sequel (Inspector Lewis) and the prequel (Endeavor). Both of them have the advantage over the early Morse episodes in that production techniques have really improved over time. One thing that I really liked was in the first episode of Endeavor when the young Morse is on one of his first cases, he meets the Oxford newspaperwoman played by Abigail Thaw, the real-life daughter of John Thaw. One of them says something like, "You really look familiar" and then they decide "in another life maybe."

Also, I was recently thinking of one of my favorite movies (I must have watched it six or seven times) -- Gosford Park. It's sort of an Upstairs, Downstairs or Downton Abbey with a murder mystery thrown in. There's a great cast including Maggie Smith in one of her best roles. I've had to watch it so many times because how all the characters are related.

A couple of comments on other shows that have been listed: Lillyhammer-- I really liked the first year, but for me it went downhill after that. Next: Shameless-- I so much wanted to like this show because of Emmy Rossum and William H. Macy (loved Fargo and The Cooler), but instead I hated it. Just too overboard for me.

Next: Why can't I find "Wag the Dog" anywhere?

And FINALLY, someone please watch "Seaside Hotel". I'd really like to hear reactions to it. Sorry for the length this time.

300: Despite all the red splashes I saw "300" five or six times. I was fascinated by both the story and the depiction. I think I would like to see more by its (dubious) creator, Direwolf.

imahogg: Please feel free to post the length you need. The system will tell you if a post gets too long. Some sharing requires conversational length. These days perhaps people don't read longer text, yet yours was well said, on topic, just fine.

Professor T: The Belgian show is fabulous. Apparently a US channel recently started showing it, free. There are versions done by other countries--have you seen them? Funny, about John Thaw's daughter! Seems there's interesting backstory (quiz?) there. Will look for this Seaside Hotel.

You remind me. In the past couple of days I've come across a mention somewhere here in FT of a (movie?) where all the superheroes are disgusted with the world and...quit? Broke Bad?

The new movie "Old Guard" starts out that way, also. "We're not helping! Nothing has gotten better".

So different from the unrelenting cheerfulness of the original Superman. Or even Deadpool, in his way. Batman was always grim and depressed, it seemed to me.

Batman was grim, but that was because of his back story. He really did believe he was helping, and from the way most of the Batman stories were presented, he really did. Batman: The Animated Series (1990s) frequently seemed like he wasn't really making a difference because there was a new villain every week, but according to the internal references in the story, Batman really did reduce crime in Gotham, and anytime he went missing for any reason, things got out of hand quickly without him. As for depressed, welllll.....

In the later Justice League Animated Series, Batman tells Wonder Woman, "I'm a rich kid with issues... lots of issues."

Border Patrol/Border Force/Nothing to Declare, all the same programmes picking up naughty arrivals from abroad each in a different country. It's on about four times a day on cable so easy to find one or two a day when it's quiet.

Also having no sport for months meant when it came back there were two or three on at the same time, motor racing, cricket, football, snooker and starting tomorrow the golf majors. I can keep the TV on all day and watch it when I pass by.

I heard that Tiger Woods finds the idea of a tournament with no audience totally new territory. It's got to feel weird--

A relief to millions like you though, to have your sports back! Here's to it going well--

You're right about that-- Batman had reason to be grim. In comparison to ever-sunny Superman though he's 'comically' morose.

It's no criticism-- I love Batman. Unless he's George Clooney. Who gets credit though just for such a good nature he put on that costume. Was it Nick Cage or Ben who flopped so badly? It ain't easy being a Superhero.

The lack of new sports programming has prompted many channels to dig deep into their collection of recordings. I have seen listings for college football games ten years old, for tennis matches which happened five years ago, for boxing matches up to a decade ago, and the like. Out of the same need have come some recordings of sports I never thought I'd see on American television: college rugby, college lacrosse, mixed rhythmic gymnastics, airplane pilon racing, sumo. And I LOVE sumo!

Isn't it wonderful there is such an archive to pull from!? Otherwise sports fans would have shriveled up like raisins. Lol, you love Sumo.

Don't forget skateboarding. Horses. Competitive eating.

I have a mental picture of camels being ridden by jockeys in silks and being loaded into the starting gates at Churchill Downs.

I just looked up "camel racing starting gate" images-- and it IS jockeys in silks lined up at the starting gate....

Well, we learn something every day. :)

Tonight we rented 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald' which is the sequel to ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ and we are happy that we did. One understands that a third in the series is being made, to which we look forward with pleasure.

For those, like me, who are new to the concept:

wiki: "Cornhole (also known regionally as bags, sack toss, or bean bag) is a lawn game in which players take turns throwing 16 ounce bags of corn kernels at a raised platform (board) with a hole in the far end..."

I highly recommend the Australian prison drama, 'Wentworth'.
It's just started its 8th season here in the UK.

It's a women's prison - and in this one, the females definitely aren't the fairer sex!

It's raw, and can be very violent, but it's a brilliant series. If anyone hasn't seen it, look out for it on Netflix if you're in the US, etc. Or take a look at YouTube vids of it. One of the scenes, depicts a certain Lucy Gambaro on the dentist's chair...

It's not for the fainthearted. Parents definitely need to keep their kids away!
