paulmallon said: "Flopsy: How about we rate shows on a 1-10 basis? 1+ awful 10+great, etc." Well, sure, but it's not up to me, I just remove naughty words *grin*. You might need two ratings for "quite good" though. 3 out of 10 British quite goods would not be the same as 7 out of 10 American quite goods so maybe quite good could appear on the scale twice. Then you might have "really good, really really good, and really quite phenomenal". :D Reply #561. Nov 18 20, 12:06 PM |

A scale sounds (more than quite) good Paul. Can you give a descriptor to more of the scale? What's 5? Oh, seriously? I called Alaskan show Canadian? Boo hiss. Reply #562. Nov 20 20, 10:41 PM |

"Jack Ryan"-- I'm watching the TV version, released in 2018. It stars John Krasinski from the US "The Office". I'm about half through Season 1 and finally adjusting (a bit) to John in this role. He's a "type B, maybe type C", and no Harrison Ford. I donno-- are they having trouble finding the right Ryan? He's been portrayed by several since Ford. Krasinski is...like Tom Hanks starring in Mission Impossible. Way too nice. Slightly doofy. Wrong nose. But, there is a season 2 and his acting is decent enough (Paul scale, a 7). I also like Wendell Pierce and Ali Suliman (9's). The plot is Tom Clancy's, so that's terrific. Reply #563. Nov 22 20, 10:54 AM |

(Well, Krasinski's reviews are good. I'll get used to him). Shows similar to "Jack Ryan": Homeland The Bureau Designated Survivor (what a great show, Kiefer Sutherland, a little like "The West Wing" if the White House were blown up) Sleeper Cell Prisoners of War London Spy Bodyguard (another I've seen. Excellent) The Americans (people can't say enough good things about this one) Reply #564. Nov 22 20, 11:31 AM |

I have just finished watching Series 4 of "The Crown"........what I cannot determine is why I enjoyed the previous series much more than this one? I suppose what I most liked about the series in general, was the fact it was depicting events that I have personally lived through (and yes, sadly, I am old enough to remember the late King George VI). But this latest one.............??? Anyone else? Also watching Star Trek - Discovery...............definitely watchable...........allowing for the fact the most memorable character is a CAT! Just not keen on the Burnham character though ! Reply #565. Nov 22 20, 3:09 PM |

A memorable cat can make a show :) I'm watching The Crown, as well. . Churchill just resigned. Phillip went on his tour. I like it. Scale: 9 Finished tv "Jack Ryan". Season 2 much better than one. Paul scale-- an 8. Reply #566. Nov 23 20, 9:21 PM |

C300 did you figure what it was about The Crown series? I think Churchill was among the best characters. Reply #567. Nov 24 20, 5:58 PM |

Godwit..............I think the problem is that in series 4, they seem to have gone more for dramatic effect rather than factual truth..........or................my memory of events in 1980's/90's, more accurate than 1950's/60's/70's due to passage of time. IMO portraying Charles & Camilla as "villains of the piece", is an inaccurate distortion of facts..........having been once married to a woman with very similar manipulative abilities to Diana, I can see the other side of the coin. Having said that, it is not all bad.........just that anyone believing it to be an accurate history lesson is wrong........it isn't. Reply #569. Nov 25 20, 3:27 AM |

"Knight rider" and "Magnum PI"-- good ole TV shows I've never seen before. Jude Law in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow--utterly stupid. Reply #571. Nov 27 20, 2:17 PM |

C30 I can't speak with much authority from across the pond. But I remember Camilla was considered a home wrecker. Highly unpopular here. Now that she's become his wife people may feel less judging I donno. Many said they would never accept her if Charles becomes King. I haven't reached that point in The Crown. Probably few think the show is accurate truth, though? Reply #572. Nov 27 20, 2:21 PM |

Hi ya Paul. I was waiting to see if someone would answer you on Queen's Gambit. I enjoyed it very much. Other than way too many long, lingering camera shots on the beautiful face of our star-- Which you may not mind one bit--the story and acting were 8+. Reply #574. Nov 28 20, 12:58 AM |

One thing I like about the Crown is that you can see all the weaknesses of the characters as well as any strengths. Charles, Diana and Camilla are divisive characters really. Some blame Charles and Camilla and some think Diana was manipulative, attention seeking and unstable. I think they are people trapped by circumstances and the 'requirements of being Royal', which doesn't mean they don't have their bad sides. Charles and Diana didn't seem to have much in common but Charles is depicted as being quite cold and cruel to Diana. She is depicted as innocent and trying to make a good effort, at first, but struggling until she finds she is more popular than Charles. Camilla is sort of in the middle. She tries to pull away from Charles but he rejects her attempts to cool things, and her husband whom she apparently loves is unfaithful and neglectful. Reply #576. Nov 28 20, 2:03 PM |

Godwit, If you like good old American detective shows, one of my favourite series was 'The Rockford Files' with James Garner, if you can find it. Reply #577. Nov 28 20, 2:07 PM |

Here's a quotation from Wkipedia. 'In 2002, The Rockford Files was ranked No. 39 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time.' Reply #578. Nov 28 20, 2:10 PM |

Choosing a star or director and watching everything they've done from start to present can triple your fun. I've seen all of Tommy Lee Jones, Meryl Streep, Robert Redford, Denzel Washington, and Ian McClellan. I've seen most of the amazing work of Helen Mirren, and Jessica Lange. This week I'm following Hugh Laurie through his career. Morgan Freeman is another actor with a rich acting history. Watching them grow up on film or TV is a 10. Reply #579. Nov 28 20, 2:10 PM |
