Curious, what are you watching while the world spins around us?

#781 was from Rotten Tomatoes "the list of the best 2020 TV shows according to critics". I abridged comments.

Not the list I expected to see.

Ah Paul, time flies so fast! "Breaking Bad" was 2008-2013. Such a GREAT show. But, already long gone.

That list above is just 2019-2020 shows...and only Rotten Tomatoes rated. Most I haven't seen so I was hoping someone has and will share an opinion.

I read an article last year that claimed "Game of Thrones" was our very last "Everyone has seen it" TV show, ever. Now there are so many networks, and so many different shows, we don't have shared TV experience.

I recall the days when "everyone" was talking the next day about "what happened last night" in X episode of whatever we were all watching. I remember the days when if you missed an episode you rushed to work so you could ask someone "what happened!?" No recording, no YouTube, no download--you just missed it. There was a delicious and socially fun aspect to that.

I remember the tea break discussions of last night's tv - or what would happen in tonight's episode but I don't go out to work now so who knows what they talk about and who has tea breaks now anyway.

But... there are still one or two shows with mega audiences over here, including Line of Duty. Last series begins tomorrow night so all you Brits, you can watch that while doing your census return and save yourself the £1,000 fine if you don't do it!

I'd like to suggest "Quicksand". It's a one season, six episode show.
I didn't expect to get pulled in at first, and then I was. On Netflix.

Paul: Did you mean to say you got "pulled in" to "Quicksand"? :)

True. Who knows what anyone is talking about "at work". Not around the water cooler, we know that much. Glad to hear there is a smash hit "everyone" is watching, thanks for that.

"Quicksand"
(2019) A tragedy at a Swedish school lands a seemingly well-adjusted girl on trial for murder. Won Best Drama of the Year and Best Actress.

Thanks Paul!

"In the Line of Duty"
(2021) Season 6 is available now in the UK BBC.

The "most watched show of 2019" (there you go Flopsy!) there was a 2020 issue re the contract with Netflix-- but that's been resolved. Netflix "struck a deal" re some international territories snafu? Please share if you know what the hangup was.

In the US the show was made available on Hulu and Acorn TV, Season 6 is back on Netflix. "Everyone" is watching it!

We just call it "Line of Duty" so maybe they retitled it for the USA/other markets? It's a 'police procedural', set in a unit that investigates other cops and as a result they're not very popular with their colleagues.

It is very British, not just because it's about British police (these guys are sometimes armed which might make them seem less alien ;) ) but also because they follow a basic rule of British tv: the storyline doesn't necessarily get resolved within a single episode but carries on through a whole series. In fact, it may not get resolved by the end of a series but makes you wait series after series after... my spoiler lips are sealed. Suffice it to say that if I don't find out whodunnit at the end of series six I'm going to have to shoot someone to make sure there's a series seven! :D

The show was a slow starter even over here so if you expect to like it straight away you probably won't. It took them at least two series to get a grip on the nation's sofa-gripping soul but it has since been voted into lists such as "Greatest Cop Shows of All Time" (8th) and "Best BBC Crime Dramas" (3rd). It can also be a bit gruesome - you have been warned!

Godwit: thanks for that info on Quicksand, I hadn't known about the accolades.
(probably because I was stuck in quicksand:-)

I just finished "binge" watching a one season, four episide "series" on Netflix called "Retribution". (It's a British murder mystery)
It may have been mentioned on earlier boards , and if so, mea culpa.
It reminded me of Dame Agatha's "Ten Little Indians/"And Then There Were None", in that there are about a dozen or so suspects, and a good case could have been made for any one of them being the murderer.
SPOILER ALERT: the butler didn't do it.
SPOILER ALERT II: there is no butler.
Gripping, I don't believe in giving anything a perfect 10 (except The Godfather-both 1 and 2), so this is a rock solid 9/10.
Give it a shot, hope you enjoy:-)

Wow Paul only The Godfather I and II get the Gold? But that means a solid 9 is a fantastic show. "Retribution" it is.

Flopsy--thanks for the insight that "In the Line of Duty" (Line of Duty) starts slow. I did see a couple of episodes I believe, and as you say, nixed it. I'll give it another go. I nixed "Breaking Bad" initially, too. I'm not great at gory and violent. Ended up watching "BB" all the way through 3 times. (BB must get a 10, Paul?)

Know of a detective show like "A Touch of Frost"? My friend adores that Frost character--a cop witty, moral, "Colombo"-esk. Maybe it's his in fact blue-collar persona. A lot of the detectives and cops are pseudo-fake blue collar. Nevermind his astounding acting skill.

I read that in the few places opening their movie theatres, like China, people have packed them to the gills.

This puts to rest the fears theatre companies had that the pandemic means the end of theatre-going forever.

Good to hear. I used to go to the movies a lot, but time and the current popularity cycle (too many sequels/franchises and I've never been interested in comic books) means I've only gone a few times a year. But right now I'd LOVE to be in a crowded theater with a big tub of popcorn.

The last movie I saw in theaters was Knives Out.

Our last movie theatre view was Knives Out, also! Happily it was a fun movie. A good (if faded) memory.

Oh, to be annoyed by the crinkling, seat kicking, loud crunching and late arrival of other movie goers once again. The giant drink! The little energetic creature on screen telling us to turn off our phones. The divine popcorn covered with a mysterious butter-like substance. I do miss it all--

We thought we'd as a globe be well past this pandemic by now, safely back in "normal" lives. Some of us are back in the movie theatres; some are still restricted to home, or re-restricted to home, and many in-between.

New strains, difficulties with vaccination roll-out, differences in opinion--but we can all agree on this--we're still on a tv binge. 2021 new shows and new seasons are coming up in April, at least in the US. Here's to the return of some famous movie faces we've missed, and to continued safety, hope and care between us.
