Curious, what are you watching while the world spins around us?

What's your favorite thing about it? Does it help you get through?

I'm just about to watch the new Wonder Woman! The household is interested in watching a movie set in the 1980s, as well as a super lady.

WONDER WOMAN: Lynda Carter is 69 years old, so the gorgeous Gal Gadot stars in the new Wonder Woman 1984 with a wonderful Chris Pine. He's definitely the kind of guy who can keep up with and love a superhero. He does rescue her a few times, which--one could argue about. A person's love should do that. It's a much better true partnership than we usually see. Dd Lois Lane ever step in and save Superman? Maybe? Anyone remember? Mostly she was plummeting downward toward a certain death, screaming, as I recall.

The opening scenes with the ambitiously competitive Wonder Woman as a child I think are fantastic, as are many of the special effects. The plot...well...don't focus on the pesky plot.

Lynda is still doing public appearances and donning her costume, and she may appear in the upcoming "The Flash". I know! Seventy is the new 45, right?! If you have had access to expensive care all your life. She looks great.

You can watch TV's "Wonder Woman The Original Series" which launched recently, if you want some Carter time.

George Clooney, who admits he was "terrible" in "Batman and Robin", joked that "for some reason I didn't get the call" to replay Batman in the upcoming "The Flash". Carter may appear in that film.

I don't know if you can watch this in N America but there's a French police series to which I am addicted. Its French title is 'Engrenages' (meaning Gears) but the BBC calls it 'Spiral'. It's very dark, almost film noir, and it's set on the seedy side of Paris with muck and bullets and sometimes gore. It's also very good television.

Anyway, if you're another addicted Brit, the next and final series starts on Saturday 2 January on BBC4 (repeated on Wednesdays). It may also improve your French (though there are subtitles). :)

It's one of those programmes where starting at the beginning is advisable. Some of the characters have stayed throughout and some of the storylines have developed with them so it might be hard to work out what's going on if you start at season 8. Just saying...

I had never watched "House of Cards" before today.
Three episodes in, I know I have 60 hours of "COVID escape" ahead.
Kevin Spacey is amazing.

Flopsy--those are often the best ones, so intertwined and complex you need to start at the beginning. Most of us Americans (us Americans? It can't be "we Americans"?) have to poke through the British slang and references, never mind the French. I watched a couple of Brit Box mysteries completely lost me from episode one. Still I persist...you all create a fantastic detective and mystery show.

Paul--I'd forgotten that one, thank you. "House of Cards" is awesome. "Corvid Escape" worthy, for sure! Poor Spacey and his whacky downfall. He was a stellar actor. Enjoy!

Stephen King was on public radio saying he loves a show called "Babylon Berlin". I've never heard of it but surely a King recommendation is excellent. Anyone seen it?

The new film "Let Them All Talk" on HBO with Meryl Streep is 10/10. If you like "Dinner with Andre" and that type of slow-paced, human psyche and relationships tale. Fantastic acting.

HAPPY NEW YEAR you all. Here's to better days ahead...

My wife and I just finished watching the three seasons of "The Worst Week of My Life" on Acorn TV. [The first two seasons are also available on BOB (Best of British TV) I think.] It was just what we needed after The Worst Year of Our Life. Good laugh out loud fun.

Several years ago we enjoyed the American version (unfortunately only one short season-- and not available for streaming except to buy separately). I knew then that it was based on a British show, but I had forgotten all about it until I noticed it while I was looking through streaming services that I might want to add. Acorn has a 7 day trial period on Roku and on Amazon Prime Channels for anyone who doesn't want to add it but might be interested in this series. The first year covers the week up to the wedding, the second is the week up to the birth of the first child, and the third is Christmas. I highly recommend it for anyone who's not seen it yet.

Anyone following Star Trek - Discovery? Opinions?

I liked the first season...........I liked SOME of the 2nd season.......I like LITTLE of current season.

The ONLY person the Captain deemed suitable for First Officer (after demoting Burnham) is an ENSIGN................sure doesnt say much for rest of crew! Easily the best character is GRUDGE (a cat).

They made a movie about one of the first people to develop anti-virus software, John McAfee.
The movie is "Gringo". It describes his life and is the most interesting, disturbing, unbelievable, fascinating biography you'll ever see.
Highly recommended.

Gringo looks interesting. I read something about his strange life a few years ago, but didn't know about the movie. For those who might be interested, there are TWO Gringo's now on Prime. This one, "Gringo: The Dangerous Life of John McAfee" will be leaving Prime on January 12th, but it might still be available on Showtime (not sure). (By the way, the other Gringo on Prime also looks interesting.)

We just watched the seven short episodes of "Upright," on Sundance. I can't recommend it highly enough. It's an Australian "trip" movie with really wonderful performances by the stars Tim Minchin and Milly Alcock and the strange assortment of characters they meet on the highway across the bleak expanse between eastern Australia and Perth. [Also starring an upright piano on a Ute.]

These all sound great, thanks for each one!

I heard a Patrick Stewart interview recently. He's 80 years old, soon, and says he does have to work harder to remember his lines in this new series, but he's also far more willing to take risks, be vulnerable, and show who the Captain is as a person, than he was as a young person.

There's a list of Golden Globe predictions I'll post soon...

OSCAR WINNERS?
"The Father" stars Oscar winners Sir Anthony Hopkins (age 83) and Olivia Colman. Hopkins plays Anthony, an elderly man struggling with changes in his mind. Some predict his performance will win Hopkins a second Oscar.

Hopkins is active on Facebook and Twitter, by the way, with his cat, playing silly songs, not taking himself "too seriously".

OSCAR WINNER?
"Ma Rainey's Black Bottom", starring the late Chadwick Boseman, whose performance could result in a posthumous Oscar. Ma Rainey was the "Mother of Blues", played by Viola Davis.

August Wilson wrote the play, and also came to my book club, years ago, because his wife was a regular. What a wonderful guy. And a wonderful play.
