Curious, what are you watching while the world spins around us?

What's your favorite thing about it? Does it help you get through?

I've been thinking about watching "Sophie: A Murder in West Cork." The recommendation makes me want to get to it sooner. I finished all of "Bosch" and liked it for the most part. I did like seeing some of the old "Wire" characters again. Marlo Stanfield becoming J. Edgar was nice; the Chief looked a lot like his role in "The Wire." Several other Wire-Alums appear from time to time. "Bosch" is okay, but for any of you that have never seen "The Wire," it's WAY better than okay.

Right now, I'm trying to force myself to watch the last three or four seasons of "The Office" (U.S. version). I see now why I quit on it. After Pam and Jim got married, it lost a lot. The five or six episodes I watched last night seemed like they were really straining to get a story. They should have done like the British version and quit while they were still ahead.

By the way, I'm still hoping some of you will watch "Upright" on Sundance. It's worth signing on for the seven day free trial just to watch this one. And the other I'm pushing is "Seaside Hotel," a Danish series starting in the 30's and going into World War II. I think it's still being made, and we should get another season or two soon. I think it might be on Prime now. It's really character driven, and the characters are great. I especially like Jens Jacob Tychsen as the actor Edward Weyse, but each of the ensemble cast is really good.

Happy Binging or Bingeing!

Just testing, nothing to see here - well, apart from a few films and tv shows.

;D

yep, just a few hundred hiding in plain sight.

I was watching Bosch, Vampire Dairies, The Originals, Lucifer and The Handmaid's Tale--nearly done with all available seasons. Slow panic setting in. need...new....s..ho..ws

Some great recommendations here. The Wire--I've heard it's among the best shows ever made but started it and too bloody and dark for me right now. Agree J Edgar in Bosch (from The Wire) was maybe a more interesting character than Bosch. Didn't like the last episode of Bosch--too many loose ends. Good show though.

I've heard many people complain that after two characters get married, the show slides downhill fast. Wonder why that is. I mean, there is interesting life and plenty of plot tension after marriage.

Maybe no one producing shows knows what that looks like.

You haven't seen the Wire? (Insert emoji of rabbit with dropped jaw.) The Wire? Seen it you have not? (Insert emoji of rabbit lying flat on floor, staring at ceiling with wide eyes and slack-mouthed jaw. The rabbit that is, not the ceiling.)

Words fail me.

Plus if it gets a bit depressing, you can always play that well-known US parlour game: Spot the Brit. Although after what's happened since that series came out, it might be light relief, you never know. The parlour game's still fun though. An American friend of mine named one of the actors in it and said "well, at least he's American" - I didn't have the heart to tell her that yes, he is, but he lives over here. :D

If a show was built on the will-they-or-won't-they tension, changing to a different dynamic means changing a lot of the show and even if the show brings in interesting plot lines, enough of the audience may be disappointed in the change to sink the show.

Also, many shows run out of steam after 3-5 seasons or there are other factors like actors's or writers' contracts ending leading to turnover. That can affect the quality and lifespan of a show. If that's when the characters married (or paired up), the show went downhill at the marriage but not because of the marriage.

Occasionally characters will marry so an actresses's real-life pregnancy can be written into the show. Since the marriage (and baby) probably weren't part of the show's plan, it involves a shift the writers may not be able to adapt to.

Thanks for those insights MariaVerde. Better than my suggestion that writers and producers are simply crummy at creating an interesting marriage.

LOL! Flopsy does an impressive flop. Yah...I had to create this thread to elicit Binge ideas so that should tell you something. I am NOT going to confess any further watching lapses so put that rabbity Evil Eye away.

Are you suggesting nearly everyone in The Wire is British? Except that American who lives in the UK.

Well, no... to be honest only a few are British but two of them were in leading roles so they stood out a bit more. Dominic West stood out partly because he wasn't well known at the time but also his accent was pretty good so few people actually believed that he went to Eton.

And Idris Elba stood out because, well, he's Idris Elba!

Have to agree the British and Australians too do an impressive American accent. Thus the "spot the Brit" game

I was floored to see an interview with a major US character from The Handmaid's Tale--he's speaking with a strong British accent. Born in Hampstead, dad British, mother Chinese. Max Minghella. He's nothing like his character whatsoever, who has a deep, flat US accent. Impressive actor/director.

Not that we have an accent. Isn't it more an absence of one?

Except in Boston, and the deep south, which no one is good at. Everyone seems to be bad at a Canadian accent, as well, except Canadians.

I dread to ask, what is your opinion of US actors doing a British accent? Let's go with the better actors. Do they pull it off?

Philadelphia has an accent but it's rarely attempted (no, Rocky is not an example - Sylvester Stallone lived here for a few years as a teenager but has an NY accent). I haven't seen "Mare of Eastown" but most people I know who did (including my mom) said that most of them were dead on.

Try being a South African listening to actors trying to do a South African accent!!! It's pretty hard to listen to, to be honest, as it never sounds anything like the way we speak over here!

"Mortdecai" a silly silly fun comedy, Johnny Depp, 2015.

I feel the same about the movie "Fargo" and their over-the-top rendition of a Minnesota/North Dakota accent, don't cha know.

The New Orleans accent seems to be dying out. I always hate to see one go.

If you like Michael Douglas (is there someone who doesn't?) his TV series "The Kominsky Method" is fun. With Alan Arkin

Found a new one today I'm liking a lot. If you enjoyed Downton Abbey --

"The Cook of Castamar". Duke in grief, plotting lords all around him, King weird and mysteriously missing, astounding cook has fear of open spaces and something in her history, sex, violence, intrigue--

not dubbed perfectly though.

Okay no Cook for you?! Not even FatherSteve. Pretty exciting cooking stuff in this TV series.

How about "Genius" with Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman and Jude Law. It's a fascinating, beautiful movie. About a famous writer and his incredible editor.

All by my lonesome here? Anybody watching anything?

Recommendations from "The New Yorker" magazine:

New Documentary called "haunting" about the life of Foodie Anthony Bourdain. "Roadrunner".
I'm still heartbroken about him, as are many of you no doubt.

"Casanova, Last Love" about the woman Casanova truly loved, and lost.

"Dragonwyck" (TCM) gothic romance (1946)
"Felicite" (Amazon and YouTube) 2017 about an Afro-pop singer in The Democratic Republic of the Congo.

My Beautiful Broken Brain (Netflix) is a very interesting medical documentary. There is just one episode.
I also watched Lenox Hill a couple of days ago, about a hospital in NYC. It follows 4 doctors on staff there, 2 neurosurgeons, an OBGYN and an ER doctor. There are 5 episodes, but only the first 4 form the original show. The 5th episode seems to be an add on, as it about how they were affected by COVID last year. Amazing program, amazing doctors and staff.
I am steering clear of murders for the time being. :o)
