Curious, what are you watching while the world spins around us?

What's your favorite thing about it? Does it help you get through?

"Impromptu" movie. It's an early Hugh Grant and other stellar actors, about the affair of Aurora "George" Sands and Chopin. It's witty, in places. Worth a peek just to see these actors in their youth.

"Silent Witness", an exceptional British detective/coroner series.

I just finishes "Defending Jacob" on Apple TV+. It was a very decent four hour miniseries.....that unfortunately the producers decided to extend to eight. Plot OK, but boy did it DRAGGGGGG! I think I've wasted way too much of my life with these slow, extended pauses where I guess I'm supposed to be reading the characters' minds.

I'm glad you liked Silent Witness, I've watched it since the beginning, i.e., for years and years and... and although it has wandered off piste a few times, it has mostly been good and, according to friends of mine in Forensics, is pretty accurate in terms of its science. Even if pathologists mixing it up in the shady world of Hungarian spies and 'derring do' is not very common. ;)

They do mix the personnel up from time to time (i.e. an actor leaves for other things) which freshens things up a bit but the strong science basis does keep it on track.

Just saw "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom". Still blown away by the phenomenal acting. We don't get to hear a ton of singing the blues, but a few treat songs.

Flopsy, you have friends in Forensics?! Do tell. I have never ever in my entire life encountered anyone in forensics.

Iamhogg: it's okay with me if I finishes. Gotta get past Flopsy though. I hit send all the time and then ...oops. Happily most people let these conversational lapses go.

Two 'sort of' forensics people is probably a more accurate description. One of my cousins married a policeman, a high speed driving instructor who one day flipped his car and as a result of his injuries had to switch to an office-bound job. He became a chain of evidence guy so was responsible to maintaining the integrity of all those little bags of grit, glass, and gristle they collect at the crime scene.

More recently, a friend's granddaughter went off to university to study chemistry, got interested in chromatography, took a forensics option, and now that's what she does. Weak stomachs need not apply!

Gad, just "grit, glass, and gristle" made my stomach turn.
Still I love those forensic films and tv shows. And admire the folks who dive in there and solve mysteries for heartbroken families.

"Defending Jacob" is a 2012 thriller. An assistant DA's son is charged with murder. Both Iamahogg and the trailer say it's gripping.

Just fantastic.

I like watching sport, and put Foxtel on to get away from Australia's total obsession with football (which I detest) - BUT most of the Foxtel sports channels show - what else - football, soccer, football, soccer ad nauseum. Of the other sport I love, they're not shown at all because of the virus, but instead they're showing classic football, classic soccer, classic football, classic soccer ad nauseum.

"Classic" definition: Crummy old games from half a century ago.

Of the other channels, I truly detest most "reality" shows - they're about as real as modified food - and I know all the dialogues of sit-coms, and Agatha Christie shows and Midsomer Murders by heart; I'm not even remotely interested in DIYs; and Foxtel's idea of history is World War II's battles for the most part, or an occasional WWI battle for good luck, or that incredibly boring Time Team where they get to dig up old fields and find nothing; I wouldn't watch any other crime shows if you paid me - talk about blood and gore! - and I hate cooking shows. How can anyone think cooking shows are entertainment? I don't get it. That's my idea of torture.

So, that leaves the news. Not the Australian news. It's mostly football or soccer, with an occasional flood or drought thrown in for light entertainment where animals are seen dying (ever so delightful) - so I leave the American or British news on all day instead.

Unfortunately, British news for the past few years has been almost all about Brexit (Oh - my - God, make a decision for crying down the kitchen sink!) or the Virus. And American news - Foxtel shows two channels of that - CNN and Fox News - so we're right back to more battles again, or the Virus. At least they don't show the football or the soccer.

Guess who's getting Foxtel removed as soon as the contract expires - and who has gone back to the local library? And if I'm very, VERY lucky, I might find a book there that's not about football or soccer or cooking or DIY etc etc etc.

Thank God for Fun Trivia.

Want to take virtual walks in lockdown? This guy has made a series of informative videos about London Districts - quite relaxing to watch and be the virtual tourist. Here's one example of these - Bankside ..link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZJxy6yPYxQ

Ooh, another tour guide to add to my list of "walks I have taken round London when I couldn't go there" - I've watched quite a few since early last year. A YouTube search on "London walking tours" brings up a lot and while some are better than others they do give a real sense of how it grew from lot of small villages into a global city. There are also lots of videos on places to eat - watch a video on Borough Market, for example, and I guarantee that by the end of it you'll be yearning for sushi, a curry, and a doughnut, though not necessarily on the same plate.

It's also quite interesting how many videos there are on "ten things I love about London" filmed by tourists who of course tend to have a slightly more "if it's Tuesday it must be the Tower, the Abbey, Big Ben, Harrods, Buckingham Palace, Camden market, Harry Potter, Horseguards, and all before lunch" viewpoint but they're often fascinating all the same.

Yes there are lots of videos on London walks Flopsy. I would say what distinguishes these are that they are in bit size chunks (no more than 10 minutes per area) but packed with interesting information. The narrator has a very soothing voice and there's interesting atmospheric background music mostly by an artist called Yash Tar (if I've spelt that correctly) though in the example I posted it's a different artist.

I looked at the one for my own area and was impressed that he got to all the interesting places even those that are hidden or off the beaten track. He must be a good researcher or have good researchers working with him.

At least lockdown has allowed me to watch far more of the sport I pay dearly for on TV, football, golf, cricket and snooker.

It's not frustrating to watch a Walk all about great places you can't visit and food you can't eat? Please explain.

I don't find it frustrating Godwit. It's frustrating not being able to do those things but the videos are like a little reminder of how things were and how things will be again, hopefully. Such videos help you travel in your mind. After all it's not just the feet that travel, it's the mind too, and if you see a video of walks you enjoy that are near you, you can plan to do some in future.

I also have photo images, as my changing screensaver, from a favourite holiday walk. When I look at them I feel the pleasure of that holiday and those views.
