"The Jury" and "Kavanaugh". Lawyer/court shows, British. It took us a while to get used to the...wigs. For one thing! I looked it up though and then understood. Took a while to understand "the Queen's Counsel" and getting ah...Nipped? Arrested. Sodden? Plod? We tried "Brief" which I think is Australian? Moves so fast and tons of references and phrases I can't follow. Not a complaint. Just saying, I need phraseology translations in some subtitles. :) Fantastic shows. Beautifully done. Lol, I'm looking forward to Flopsy "biting their legs off" if "Line of Duty" next season doesn't show Reply #21. Apr 25 20, 11:59 PM |

wiki: Belgravia begins at the Duchess of Richmond's ball (night of 15/16 June 1815) held in Brussels for the Duke of Wellington two days before the Battle of Waterloo.... Nice. Reply #24. Apr 26 20, 12:55 AM |

Godwit, American Gothic is murder mystery and extremely convoluted. Flopsy, I loved Happy Valley but as I can still remember what happened I won't be rewatching it. I found the last season of Line of Duty a little disappointing but will be watching the next one, I can't abandon it now. The first series of Broadchurch was excellent but I turned off the second one because it was so awful. I don't mind suspending disbelief for Midsomer Murders but not for the 'grittier type of show'. And yes, I have been putting my brain into neutral, getting my knitting out and watching the early Midsomer Murders - it's great as I can't remember whodunnit so it all comes as a surprise again. I enjoy wondering why Joyce is never a suspect - she is always on the scene. I also wonder why she doesn't murder Tom as he's so awful to her. It also worries me that Tom might be on the take - how on earth does a policeman afford to live like he does? Reply #25. Apr 26 20, 6:08 AM |

Just finished watching the Canadian/American series Sue Thomas FBEye. It was better than I expected. It was on the FREE site www.tubitv.com Has a lot of b movies But also has lots of classic movies and tv shows. Does have commercials but only 1 or 2 at a time and short ones. About every 15-20 minutes. Unfortunately I have been told that this site in ONLY AVAILABLE in US and Canada at the moment. Reply #26. Apr 26 20, 8:14 AM |

Hmm. Tom is a Detective Chief Inspector. Midsomer is supposed to be somewhere crossing the Hampshire/Berkshire borders. My detective work (aka Google) tells me that a DCI in Hampshire earns about £58k-£65k per annum. That's not bad. Especially if you bought your house thirty years ago and have paid off the mortgage. I'd still kill him though, pompous mansplaining condescending smug know-it-all. Plus think of the widow's pension! And no one would notice an extra body lying around, that area is covered in corpses! I always thought it was in the Cotswolds, I've definitely seen a shot of Oxford masquerading as Causton (rather a nice riverside pub where the Jolies whiled away some time once!). In the books the nearest big town is Reading. Anyhoo, they're all expensive areas. Reply #29. Apr 26 20, 11:02 AM |

And yes, a very dangerous area. Someone once said if Jessica Fletcher holidayed in Midsomer it would be a bloodbath! Reply #30. Apr 26 20, 11:03 AM |

Not sure about watching the updated version of Van der Valk tonight. I remember it first time around and how good it was. I wonder if they will use the same theme tube Eye Level which reached number one in the UK Single Charts. As it clashes with the final episode of The Race Across the World I will record and watch it another time. Reply #31. Apr 26 20, 12:13 PM |

I'll have to get out a map and find these places across the pond. Would learn a lot. I watched and loved "A Touch of Frost"--detective copper-- very interesting class contrast to the high-steppin' opera loving "Morse". Very different location? I read that the actor (Morse) did indeed have an alcohol problem a portion of that show. But he took hold of it during one of the later seasons. I wonder if watching the Race will help you in the author and geo Races here. Reply #32. Apr 26 20, 12:44 PM |

'Belgravia' is actually about the rise of the middle classes - particularly the people who made fortunes as a result of the Industrial Revolution. Their money enabled them to move in social areas previously reserved for the aristocracy, and there was a bit of a clash - and what is drama without a clash? Life on Mars and its sequel, Ashes to Ashes are a bit different from most police stories as they involve police officers thrown back in time. Not much, not centuries, just enough to make for jarring differences between their 'current' realities and the realities they find themselves in - maybe only twenty years but significant. Like not having personal radios or the difference in how women officers were treated. They are the restless dead but only some of them know they're dead... Reply #34. Apr 26 20, 7:09 PM |

Yes! Peaky Blinders is fantastic. I'm revisiting my Granada Television series collection of Sherlock Holmes. Jeremy Brett was outstanding in the role of Holmes. Reply #36. Apr 26 20, 8:45 PM |

Saw episode 1 of Silent Witness. About a tough, compassionate coroner? Absorbing! Another ending where regulations, office politics and delays result in a sad ending, nobody wins. More like real life in police work, I imagine. Liked the characters. Thanks! Tried to see Life on Mars but they want more money. From the trailer the star reminds me of the super incredibly deliciously handsome and utterly untrustworthy Mentalist. Where is that actor, anyway? What's Pinky Blinders about? Reply #40.
