Curious, what are you watching while the world spins around us?

What's your favorite thing about it? Does it help you get through?

hooked on this gorgeous delectable "The Cook of Castamar"

also read that Nick Cage has a new show in theatres called "Pig". It's said he's done an excellent job. It will stream (netflix?) soon.

"The Duchess of Duke Street", another period series about someone who loves to cook.

A bawdy lower class gal wants exposure to the finer things, as well as teaching from a French chef, so she gets a job cooking for the jet set.

I remember The Duchess of Duke Street! It was on Masterpiece Theater in the mid-70s. I was a kid so I only remember the title and the fact it was on, though.

Has anyone else found that watching the Olympics is helping them with flag-related questions? :-)

I get that "Which country enters the Olympics arena twice" right!

Oh interesting! The Duchess of Duke Street is from the 70s you say. Makes sense, for the cinematography and style.

Episode 2 has taken a dark tone for our cook! I'm willing to bet she'll turn the tables though...she loves her gentle papa but she's more like her ambitious mum.

It's not delicious for the cooking aspect, so far, like The Cook of Castamar. One scene she's self-taught terrible and the next she's complimented on her meal by the prince. Still, a good show.

The 70s BBC shows have a distinct look - I call it the Cardboard Set Era. Very 'stagey' and the sets are minimalist, most likely due to budget. There's also the video inside/film outside which, considering the technology of the era, is very obvious.

I'm very nostalgic for those shows because I grew up on them, and I think the reason I like Doctor Who despite generally not liking science fiction is because the classic series is very much a cardboard set show.

And those campy, fabulous introductions!

Can you share some other shows with cardboard sets? It would be fun to have a look

The main ones I remember are Upstairs, Downstairs (I took the first two series out of the library about 20 years ago and it's very soapy) and the Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries featuring Ian Charmichael. they filmed a few more in the late 80s with Edward Petherbridge (?) and those are clearly the transition period, where the sets are still cheap but there are attempts to make it look more like the current day.

Later on, I watched I, Claudius (some amazing performances - John Hurt plays Caligula and there's one monologue that's just chilling) and the Jane Austen adaptations (except for Northanger Abbey which is a late 80s adaptation and on top of it pretty bad). As you can guess by my team, I have the DVD boxed set of the JA adaptations. The best is Pride and Prejudice, but Persuasion is probably the most typically cardboard.

Another transition series is The Citadel, which was my obsession when I was 15. I found it on YouTube a few months ago and while it's pretty good, I have to admit that my 11 out of 10 review had a lot to do with my teenage crush on Ben Cross.

There was also a children's anthology called Once Upon a Classic. I remember watching it but the only show I remember clearly was What Katy Did. I ended up being slightly obsessed with the Katy books, and bought two of the three main volumes while on vacation. Nice copies - fake red leather and embossed. I stupidly donated them to the library's used book store when I graduated from college but a few years ago managed to find and buy those editions. I've never seen the shows anywhere (and don't even know if they exist - BBC wiped tapes into the 70s, although IMDb says Katy aired in 1976 which I think was post-wiping), and would give my gold membership for a copy.

It occurs this would make a really great quiz topic....and you write beautifully, so I'm nominating you for it MariaVerde.

If I could count the lovely treasures I casually gave away or left behind in my youth. It seems then that everything is possible, things come and go, and it requires hindsight to realize which are treasures.

I've started His Dark Materials.
Not what I thought it was. Anyone seen it?

That's very flattering, but I probably don't have enough verifiable knowledge for it. If there's someone out there slightly older and UK based (so they would have seen more of these shows and as an adult, or at least a teen)...

To Reply #951:

I have watched "His Dark Materials". The first season was pretty good and quite faithful to the first book in the series "The Golden Compass" (as known in the US). Certainly it was a much more faithful adaptation than the Daniel Craig - Nicole Kidman movie version from several years ago which was heavily "bowdlerized". The second season wasn't quite as good, but watchable. A third season is in the works. My review of the first season appeared in my own virtual blog "Science Fiction Interpretations" on page 21 of that blog, post #410.

I read your Sci Fi remarks on His Dark Materials that you mention. That's helpful stuff. Sounds like season 1 at the least is well worth viewing.

I also enjoyed the remarks about WestWorld. I saw a few episodes when it first came out but had given up on it. I'm curious if Hopkins walked away from it for a reason. Need to look up some interviews and see.

Season 1 episode 4 of "The Duchess of Duke Street" is "unavailable" according to my TV screen. What does that mean? Why would an episode mid-season be "unavailable"?

It's the episode where she dubs herself a Duchess and gets out of the financial mess her husband put her in--so an important one.

By Episode 9 I'm having trouble liking her. She's become a bit full of herself, and blunt and unkind to her staff--compassion for them was what created her success in the first place. Will have to see what's going on. Is she ill? Lonely? Tired of it? Got a fat head what with all the Lords and Barons?

aha, her closest staff told the high and mighty to change her ways, on The Duchess of Duke Street! So she was getting too big for her skirts.

I can't get season 2 for some reason. Who has an idea for something to watch?

"Waking Ned Devine" is hilarious, great movie.

I imagine you all are sick sick sick of sitting on the couch. There's a covid spike slated for October. Guess we need to get out there and do stuff in the sunshine while we can.

Fall shows come out soon. You can get creative. All the movies by your favorite director. In a specific decade. All black and whites. Every Best Actor Oscar winner across the decades. Lounge Challenges in movies and TV. Disaster films for comic relief.

Meanwhile maybe plan to write a quiz or Single Question on each of your viewing adventures, in Nov quiz writing month.

I saw Waking Ned Devine in theaters when it first came out. It’s one of the relatively rare movies where a comic performance got an Oscar nomination
